The constraints of the business

The business succeeds if all departments succeed.

Do you have top-tier tech but bottom-tier marketing? No one knows about your fancy app.

Stellar sales, but poor product? High churn and pissed-off customers.

Those are your constraints.

This was the problem for one of the tech teams I was mentoring.

We built up the tech team fast, but marketing was getting all customers from Meta ads, and CLTV (customer lifetime value) was low.

A dangerous situation.

I’m a big believer in the ability of the tech team to level up other departments. The tech team has all the data. They can use it in novel ways.

Here is how to turn that into a superpower.

First, you need transparency of goals.

The tech team needs to know what marketing is trying to achieve.

Secondly, you need a numbers mindset.

The tech team should know the company’s domain. If you’re a SaaS, just building the product is not enough.

You need to be able to get new customers and retain what you have to grow.

Thirdly, they need the ability to work across departments on business goals.

Let’s raise CLTV:

  • Get people to buy more
  • Get people to buy for longer
  • Get people to buy more often

How?

The data is in the hands of the tech team. Sometimes, marketing doesn’t know exactly what to ask for.

But …

There’s gold in past orders. There’s gold in customer profiles. There’s gold in the list of emails collected.

A fantastic tech team opens opportunities for departments to capitalize on them.

An average tech team waits for feature requests and protects their backlog.

Only one of those can create a massive impact.

P.S. Your prompt for the week … what opportunities could you open for other departments? Let me know.

Best regards,

Taj
