60k per month. That’s what a 10-person dev team costs, just in salaries. That’s 800k per year in business expenses.

If the project they are working on does not produce the desired result, that money can sink a startup.

But in a larger company, I’ve seen first-hand how a team of 10 people can waste over $1 million working on something that never sees production.

You may even have a few such teams working on pet projects happily wasting your development budget that you’re writing off as R&D on your balance sheet.

That inefficiency is why a small, focused startup can compete with larger, established companies.

But it’s also an opportunity for larger companies to adopt a lean approach and invest those resources in forming “internal startups.”

No matter the size of the company, it is crucial to put effort into finding the initiatives that contribute to business growth.

Not everything will be a smash dunk. But if your learning loops are fast, you can shut down the dead-ends quickly.

If you’re going to fail, fail fast and cheap. That way, you’ll still have some budget left over to pursue the next good idea until you find the one that also works.
