If technical knowledge is the baseline, your domain knowledge is the multiplier of the value you can create.

You can apply general principles and best practices across different projects. Still, unless you know your domain really well, you won’t do your best as a software engineer and a technical leader.

That’s why I make time to learn as much as I can about the industry and business I’m in.

I talk to other departments, read articles and books, watch videos, and talk to experts.

Over the years I’ve learned about the business of ads, dating apps, fitness tracking, whiskey…

Recently, I’ve been learning about the mobile/web games industry.

Learning about the specifics of the business is as important as keeping your technical skills sharp.

Over the years, I’ve met people who are absolutely not interested in the business they are in. They only care about technology.

That’s a bad attitude. The tech you create is in service of the business goals.
