Feelings are good, but metrics are better
How do you ensure that your decisions and actions have a positive effect?
You need some metrics in place that are relevant to your business.
That’s hard to get right. If you measure the wrong things, you’ll optimize the wrong parts.
There’s another problem. Plenty of metrics will lag behind your changes, so it may be difficult to attribute a result to your actions.
My suggestion here is to experiment and iterate.
But you have to start somewhere.
There are two ways to measure:
- Internal to the team
- Customer impact
One metric internal to the team could be how long it takes from the moment you start to work on a feature or a bug until it’s deployed.
Uptime, new signups, churn, and bug report frequency could measure customer impact.
The point is to become outcome-driven and choose initiatives strategically based on facts, not feelings.
P.S. What metrics are you already tracking?
Best regards,
