Do the right thing, wait to get fired
As an engineering leader, you may be faced with an unethical choice.
Perhaps you get asked to start collecting your users’ information without their consent?
Tweak the numbers a bit before an important investment meeting?
Implement dark patterns in your product?
Downplay a security vulnerability?
Covertly monitor your employees?
It’s not always easy to figure out what is illegal.
But it’s much easier to feel what is unethical.
If it feels wrong, it probably is wrong.
You have a choice.
Do the right thing and wait to get fired.
They may take you up on it (rarely), but that’s just a signal to find a place where you won’t be asked to do dodgy stuff.
Best regards,
Taj
