Building teams is a messy process
Finding the right people is not easy and interviews can only get you so far.
You’ll only know if you made a good choice after you’ve worked with someone for a time.
I went through this initial stage many times and I’ve seen the best results when I corrected course quickly.
You got someone who’s a bad fit? It’s better to keep looking than to try to train someone to a solid fit.
At that initial stage, you can’t afford the investment. You need to perform, or there won’t be runway left.
You need people who hit the ground running and the difference between an okay-fit and an excellent fit is not 20%. It can be 5x.
P.S. It’s also not a great idea to test forever before committing. It will put off the most capable people who have plenty of options, scaring away the very talent you’re trying to attract.
Yours,
Taj
