Don't agree before you understand.

This is one of the top reasons for bad communication between business and tech:

“Hey, I need this [feature, report, email, presentation].”

If the request comes from your boss, it’s easy to say “yes sir” and comply.

It’s a trap.

They are asking for a deliverable, but they want an outcome. And if the deliverable will not lead to that outcome, it will be your fault.

This is true for clients and coworkers. You need to understand what they are trying to do.

But there is a trick. Be empathetic.

Signal that you are prepared to help. Tell them you will do better if they tell you what they are trying to achieve.

Then, focus on the outcome until you understand what they are trying to do.

You may uncover that the report they wanted will not help. You may even have a better way of getting them what they want.

And if you’re ever on the other side, asking someone for a deliverable, make sure you tell them the outcome you want.

Make it easy for them to help you get what you want.

Much love,

Taj
