On the importance of strategic work

Going from being an individual contributor to leading a team is a massive switch.

It’s easy to keep working hands-on and take on a few extra tasks like a planning meeting here and a 1:1 there. That’s comfortable. You’re still mainly doing what you’ve known. You clock out.

It’s the following day; you wake up, do the routine, have a coffee, and come to work. It’s an ordinary Tuesday.

You see a note on your table. You are forbidden to write code or do code reviews. You are not allowed to ssh to production servers. You can’t query the database. You are not even allowed access to the git repository. Good luck.

You have 8 hours in front of you. Tick. Tock.
